The Hunter in the Heather

A Small Worlds Adventure

Nobody has seen the purseweb spider on Coldharbour Common for twenty-eight years, and the warden is about to burn the bank where it last lived. Ezra counts every dew-lit web on the bank at dawn and finds none at all on the sandy patch at the bottom: zero webs, zero spiders. So that patch goes first. But Wren saw something run across the sand, and at night, by torchlight, the empty patch starts to glitter.

About the Small Worlds series

Small Worlds is a series of illustrated adventures for readers aged ten to twelve about the small living things all around us. Wren and her new stepbrother Ezra, at a field station on the edge of a wild common, chase real questions about insects, plants and pond life with a hand lens, a field guide and no magic. Each book delivers one natural-history topic through a race to answer a question before something is lost, and teaches how to look closer.
