An old brass ticket machine prints a ticket for a journey in 1888: Mannheim to Pforzheim, single. Through the next door, Ollie and Zara find Bertha Benz and her two sons quietly pushing the world's first car out of the yard before dawn, to drive it further than anyone ever has. Ollie is sure the engine is all that matters. A hundred kilometres of hills, a chemist's shop and a dark descent will teach him otherwise.

About the Journey Makers series
Journey Makers is a series of illustrated adventures for readers aged ten to twelve about transport and travel, from the first wheel to the first trains, ships, cars and planes. Ollie, who is sure the engine is everything, and Zara, who reads every map, help out at a small transport museum where an old ticket machine prints tickets for real journeys from the past. Each book rides one famous first journey from start to finish and shows what it really took to get there.
